Update #1: Five Interesting Facts We’ve Learned from the Survey
Throughout the Velocity process, more than 4,000 individuals have shared information, ideas and input into our process through the Velocity online survey. Below are five interesting facts that we’ve learned from them:
VISION FOR THE FUTURE: Respondents were asked to offer three words that best captured their vision for the future of Downtown by 2020. The top six words that surfaced: Safe, vibrant, clean, accessible, fun and friendly.
WHAT HAS MOST IMPROVED DOWNTOWN: When asked to select the most important factor in improving Downtown over the past five years, Downtown residents selected physical improvements (such as the Cultural Trail and Canal) and Downtown housing as the most important factors.
MOST IMPORTANT CURRENT PRIORITY: 71% of respondents prioritized improved transportation options as a very important improvement to enhance Downtown Indianapolis in the future.
OPINIONS ON WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT:“Many of these improvements hinge on transit reform. Ultimately, I think attracting new, exciting business is the most important thing, but new, exciting businesses don’t want to come to a city that doesn’t value an effective transit program.” “Create a better environment for Downtown residents – convenient shopping & retail, better schooling options, more event and festival attractions.” “Increase the availability of affordable housing for middle-income residents, and work to decrease crime in residential neighborhoods.”
PRIORITIES BASED ON AGE: Easy and affordable parking is more often considered very important by respondents ages 50 to 64 than by respondents in the other age groups, particularly those 24 to 34. Respondents ages 50 to 64 and 24 to 34 have a greater desire for a circulator/shuttle to connect attractions than respondents ages 35 to 49. Respondents ages 50 to 64 were more concerned with reducing homelessness and panhandling than the other age groups.
